Rule Two: Embrace Your True Expenses | Break up larger, less frequent expenses into smaller, manageable amounts. By saving monthly for insurance premiums, holidays, or car repairs, when the time comes, your money is ready and waiting to do its job. Rule Three: Roll With The Punches | When life changes, so must your budget. Make adjustments and move along. Flexible budgets succeed because they’re guilt-free, realistic, and sustainable. Rule Four: Age Your Money | As you repeat the first three rules, you’ll increase the time between earning a dollar and the moment you need to spend it. Using this budgeting app for last 6-months (Including the trial time), started seeing money stick around for more days after pay day; surely developing better financial planning & habit for me; I am getting better in using the app by budgeting over & over following pay days; now I use the app effectively than when I started. Free trial helps in knowing the app & let me go through few pay days but I had to subscribe after trial period. I never needed to use their customer support likely because I attend their short online webinars on how to use this app. I purchased annual subscription after trial, going well. I never tried any other app but Microsoft excel this is my first budgeting app & hopefully last one I need! It runs both on iPhone & computer.

5/5 stars! First thing to note is this isn’t really a budgeting app you can just download and immediately start using without reading up on the YNAB rules and methods first. It’s not your traditional budgeting app and there’s things you need to know that aren’t/can’t be entirely intuitive. Before you even start your free trial lookup Nick True’s YouTube tutorial series on YNAB and read some articles on the official YNAB website. If you like what you see then go ahead and start your free trial. The upside of having to spending a few hours of learning is that this method really does help you get out of debt, keep your spending realistic, and get you to start saving a good amount of cash. Something important for new users is if you’re paycheck to paycheck: you don’t budget an entire month at once, you just budget as each paycheck comes in. Ask yourself what does my money need to do until next paycheck. Then once you finally break the cycle you start budgeting by month and get a lot more flexibility. My main tip is to do manual entry and don’t rely on the auto bank importing. Auto importing is good for helping you reconcile after the fact but even then it’s just a minor convenience, despite what you’d intuitively think, really. You won’t be getting the full benefit of this app if you rely on it solely because there is a lag on transaction imports. It only takes a few seconds to log each transaction and really they should have never added auto import as an option because it makes the system harder to stick to correctly. This app enforces that your budget is balanced AT ALL TIMES. If you’re relying on the auto imports then there’s no way to know that your budget is still 100% balanced. You should be checking your category balances before you swipe your card. It’s not like other apps that let you overspend and then ignore it because of the enforced balancing. This is the magic that makes overdraft fees a thing of the past and moves you towards a healthy financial life.
  • Fundamentally changed how I view my money

I’m not one to write reviews, but this app has been life changing for me. The ability to choose which accounts to include and exclude has allowed me to isolate the exact view I need into my finances. Other apps automatically pull in every account, which for me meant shared accounts with my partner and savings accounts. What I really wanted was to see only my personal active spending accounts. This app allows for that. So now I have an accurate running balance that includes my credit card balances and my bank account. It helps me keep from spending more on my credit cards than I can pay off per month. The other thing the app does is require you to review and approve every expense that comes through. When I used Mint, the automation was actually very unhelpful because it would constantly miscategorize without validating so it always felt overwhelming when I checked in, like I needed to untangle a mess. YNAB makes suggestions based on your previous categorizations, but leaves the final decision to you. After using this app for a year now, I can confidently say I am so much more aware of my spending patterns. Where I used to be like “ugh where did all my money go?!” Now I’m acutely aware of my spending patterns and habits. I’m able to predict, plan ahead, and spend/save with much more confidence and intentionality. Also their customer care folks are wonderful! Thank you, YNAB!!

I only wish I had started using YNAB sooner. I had hit a wall with how we were budgeting, because it wasn’t working. Now instead of months feeling too long and paychecks too short, we make it through the month with ease and money leftover. Win-win. The app is so easy to use and I actually look forward to budgeting each month!

YNAB was the perfect implementation of the type (Envelope) of budget that I can work with. They keep up to date with bank sync problems and have regular updates pushed out to all apps. A great community backs it up and is always willing to help.

I am the worst at budgeting. Often it feels like I’m just tracking spending. But thisTool not only helps me stay on track it helps me get back on track if I wander off too far. The best part is all the support you can get and all the ways that people use it to fit their needs. I can plan for annual items and subscription services and time everything correctly to my paycheck. I can use the tool on my iPad, computer, and phone I enter data as I leave the drive-thru...It’s just really easy, but super smart too! I’ve never stayed with a tool this long that have to do with money.

I signed up for YNAB a year ago and have made it an integral part of how I receive and spend money. I initially signed up for it after bouncing a check and realizing I needed to make a change in my own “money behavior,” and since signing up (and, most importantly, learning how to use the YNAB system) only twelve months ago I have saved a significant amount of money towards an emergency fund, and paid off even more in debt. I never, ever, ever thought I’d be able to get where I am in just one year. As long as you stick to the system and make it a part of your daily life, YNAB can change your life and make you feel secure and in control of your own money. It’s completely worth the subscription fee. The mobile app is easy to use and I’ve never experienced any bugs or crashes. It alone got me where I am today. It’s one of the few apps I use every day. Very recently I learned that YNAB also has a web app for desktop which offers even more functionality, so now I use that when I have time to sit down and spend a few minutes with my budget and use the mobile app when I need to budget on the fly. I love YNAB and I want everyone to get as much out of it as I do!

YNAB has always been about teaching and guiding. But in recent years they just flat out force us to use settings that should be optional. It’s insulting. My wife and I have multiple categories where we need to be able to move a negative balance forward. Healthcare bills and shared family accounts (like cell phone) that we get reimbursed for are just two examples. It’s Christmas right now. Like good original YNAB students, we save up all year for it. It’s ok if we go $100 over for Christmas for a loved one. We don’t spend that category in January and we reevaluate if we need to put away more each month at that point. Without the ability to move negative amounts forward, we can’t use this without pulling our hair out every few months. There is absolutely no reason for us to have to “find” the money for $250 that we know we are getting back in a couple weeks or even a couple months. But just because it crosses a calendar month, we have to take from kids toys or household goods to pay for it. Beautiful. And why should my credit card balance matter AT ALL if my categories always balance? The exact perfect timing of my CC payment by calendar month isn’t relevant and shouldn’t effect high level balances. But sometimes it does even if the payment is made on time. There are one or two other things that YNAB is fully aware of that many users need in order to have a stress-free budget. But they are choosing not to make them options to turn off. Their own feedback to users is clear that they reject the idea of letting users use YNAB for a slightly more traditional budget, even if it would only take 3 settings options to change. The current YNAB still has a decent user interface, likely a remnant of the original. So why does it have to poison itself with a few ideological settings that thousands of people would be willing to pay for if they could turn them off? I had to move to a different, ugly, traditional budgeting application that barely got modern because YNAB has some snobby entrepreneur holding his/her ground on a couple of points for ego sake.

For an app that asks for $89 a year acting as a premium budgeting service, you would think they would have their account API protocols sorted out. If the idea is to budget down to the dollar yet they cannot handle importing major accounts like Capital One, Bank of America, Navy Federal, and American Express, then if you have one of those accounts, it renders this app useless as it is an all or none scenario. Stick with Mint or some other free service that knows how to handle these accounts. Check YNAB’s forums...this stuff has been going on for years with no resolve.
