Description

GyPSy Guide’s narrated driving tour for the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park is an excellent way to enjoy all the benefits of a guided tour while you explore at your own pace. There are 105+ audio points that play automatically along a tour route, featuring the best things to see and do, stories, tips and driving directions. Professional tour guides share advice on how to prioritize your time at recommended “not to be missed” viewpoints, suggested side-trips and places of interest. Tours work offline, using free GPS signal and location services, so no data roaming, network, or wifi is required while touring. It’s Just Like Having a Tour Guide in Your Car™ WHAT TO EXPECT: Glacier National Park in Montana protects some of the most visually stunning mountain terrain anywhere, with giant mountain peaks, above tree-line alpine terrain and glacier fed lakes feeding alpine to valley length waterfalls. The earliest National Park managers felt it was important to create a driving route that would cross the Park between West and East and climb over the Continental Divide. The road they created would be purely for sightseeing. Then starts the story about stubborn engineers, hard working labourers and many skeptics. Though the drive is only 50 miles, expect to spend most of a full day taking in the mountain views, alpine flower filled meadows and waterfalls. While the views are numerous, the pullouts aren’t. We’ll give you plenty of notice so both the driver and passengers can relax and feel comfortable about what’s ahead. And we climb, in many places the road is carved right out of the mountain side. But there is only one switchback located at “The Loop“. You’ll find out why. The engineering marvels along the drive like Triple Arches and the Tunnels are visually impressive. So are the stories of the “powder monkeys” tasked with hanging off the cliffs by rope, drilling holes and stuffing them with dynamite. If you are touring early in the season, you might get a free car wash at the Weeping Wall, as the snow melt showers over the road. Have your camera ready, you’re going to be taking a lot of photos today. Most will want to capture the milestone of the highest point along the route, and perhaps warm up inside at the Logan Pass Visitor Centre. The valleys and alpine terrain are also ideal environments for a variety of wildlife and animals sightings are common. The tour can be driven in either direction, between West Glacier and St Mary, with different commentary, while still pointing out the major sites. WHAT YOU’LL SEE: Highlights along the tour route include • West Glacier • Apgar • Lake McDonald Lodge • The Loop • Weeping Wall • Triple Arches • Oberlin Bend • Logan Pass • Tunnels • Big Bend • Wild Goose Island • Lunch Creek • Haystack Falls • Bird Woman Falls • Siyeh Bend • St Mary BATTERY USAGE: ++ Continued use of GPS/Location Services in the background increases battery usage. We strongly recommend taking a cigarette style (DC outlet) car charger. Avoid using a direct connection to the USB port of a rental vehicle. IPADS: ** iPad models must include a GPS chip. Please note that Apple only install these on the iPad Wifi + Cellular models. Wifi only iPad models have limited location service capabilities and are unable to play commentary automatically. DOWNLOADING: The apps are larger in size in order to work offline. You must be on wifi to download as the store may block the download over cellular networks. I’ve downloaded a variety national park touring apps over the years and have even paid a high price. This app is the best. We were referring to the guide like someone we knew before the trip was over. Works in background as you drive.
  • Excellent commentary and performance!

Best audio app out there. Just took a ride in The Road to the Sun in West Glacier National Park. Used it in Hawaii on The Road to Hana. Excellent

My travel companion had used this in Utah and told me it was a must. She was right! It was almost like the narrator knew our questions ahead of time. Won’t travel a national park without it!

There is so much natural beauty and interesting geology that makes up Glacier National Park, it is very sad that this audio tour spends so much time on the construction of the road and so little on explaining the geology, flora and fauna and history of the park. Disappointing.
  • Don’t take the trip without Gypsy Guide

We stumbled across the app and tried it out. Loved it. Gave lots of insight on the trip and it was convenient to use in the car. The stories varied a little bit as we reversed our direction back down the mountain. We will try this for other parts of our trip.
  • Love the app

We learned so much and talked to two other people who recommended the App. Is it Bob, Phil, or someone else? We love it!

I highly recommend this series of APPs of you are planning on visiting these parks! This was a marriage saver!! If you ever struggle on what and when to see sites, while planning multiple National Park visits during peak seasons, then this is the APP for you! It takes planning to the next level! I purchased The Yellowstone/Teton and after purchased Glacier as a separate APP. It will sync to your radio so that all can hear and includes a map. The narrator was amazing, he did not talk too much and the signal was NEVER lost even though our navigation and phone signals were weak. He provided interesting commentary on the National Parks, land marks and geography. You will not be disappointed and will not need to hire a tour guide!
