  • A full-time job

Pros: - flying iconic ships from Star Trek - fun faction system - multiplayer Alliance system giving you a sense of comradery Cons: - too many different resources you need to mine, making hitting your daily objectives a full time job - this is technically free to play, but if you want to be a heavy hitter you need to spend money or grind for a year - lazy mission design with wrong sprites and repetitive objectives This game definitely helped me get through this quarantine, but I had to uninstall it after seven months. The only thing that kept me playing for that long was being a part of an awesome alliance. My teammates had a very active discord channel we coordinated and shot the breeze on. We were also strong enough to go head to head with all the other alliances in our server, which made gameplay much easier. You can mine more freely if no one wants to mess with you. There are a lot of cool elements to the game. It’s engaging; no matter your level, there’s always some new challenge to meet. There’s a lot of strategy to the game; using the right officers, faction ships, and ship types in a kind of Rock Paper Scissors to overcome different opponents. There are countless combinations, with new ships and officers added every month. It’s an awesome feeling when you launch the Enterprise or a strong Klingon bird of prey for the first time. On the other hand, there are drawbacks. Scopely prioritizes playable officer and ship variety over quality mission content. You don’t really play for the missions or the story, such as it is. Doing them only gives you the rewards you need to keep growing. If you actually like Star Trek it can drive you crazy when they lazily show the wrong ship or alien sprite in a mission. You may face a Naussican flying a federation ship as the “Romulan Warbird” you need to beat. All the missions begin to feel the same after a while, too. “Fly to this system. Blow up this ship. Return to your base.” With the occasional sprinkling in of “mine 10,000 of this resource, too.” Speaking of resources, since I started playing they’ve introduced a ton more unique resources that you need to collect. Different kinds are needed to upgrade different ships or to complete different research. When it was only a half dozen types to worry about it was more manageable, but now you cannot complete your daily goals or the daily, weekly, or monthly events without spending hours managing mining ships for different resources scattered at opposite ends of the map. All while dodging enemy alliance players and those rogue players who just like attacking everyone for fun. This is one of the biggest reasons I stopped playing. Grinding takes the fun out of the game. On the topic of alliances, being in an active one makes a big difference for your gameplay experience. Any serious ones are private and you join by invitation only. They negotiate rules of engagement with each other, and violating them can and does lead to intense wars. This is a PvP game, and the wars are a lot of fun. They do make it harder to complete your daily or weekly goals or objectives, which loses you valuable rewards you need for building yourself up. The top alliances have some ridiculous political negotiations that rival the United Nations in intensity. Weaker alliances get swept up in rules the stronger ones agreed to. And even if you play by the rules each server has a handful of players or alliances who spend all their time breaking them out of spite. If you join an alliance and make it up to officer ranking you will spend most of your time helping get some resolution for other alliances braking the rules against your players. Being a strong alliance requires many active players who are high level and have powerful ships. Having a powerful ship requires a lot of time or money. Fresh out of space dock your new ship is going to be relatively weak. To strengthen it you need specific parts and resources. To get them you can grind for a few days (for a weaker ship) to months (for a high level ship). Unlocking ships means you need to collect empty blueprints for them, too. You can buy them outright or you can spend the next 12 months getting two a month for that specific specialty miner you need. This game is pay to win. Given enough time you can max yourself out and hit the current server level cap, but all the players who spend money will outpace you by at least half a year. In that time your ship will not be able to stand up to them. This game is a constant grind while your miners keep getting sniped. If you like PvP it’s fun and keeps you on your toes. If you don’t it’s enough to make you quit. You don’t have to pay to play unless you want to hold your own against other players or you don’t have the patience to grind resources eight hours a day for a year. The collaborative teamwork aspect is a lot of fun, but other players will constantly attack you and the galaxy chat is full of people you will need to mute immediately. Ultimately the novelty wears off quickly and your team is what keeps you dedicated to a game that boils down to little triangles moving across a map. For me that was enough to keep playing for months longer than I would have, but it became too much of a chore and a cost sink.

The game has such an imbalance to big players that pay large amounts of in app purchases. A $100 dollar purchase is a drop in the bucket here. If you invest the time you can grow to a mid level player but you become fun target practice just to be bullied around. It’s a game that actually encourages players to be bullied and even in the in game chats but nothing is ever done. So if you want to spend loads of money to keep up then this is your game.
  • Game is full of bugs and glitches that ruin what could be a good game

This game has potential. The graphics are good, the theme and most of the interface is decent. But the game crashes/freezes/glitches on a daily basis. You have to put up with a lot for the game to be playable and the frustration from the technical stability does not ruin all enjoyment that could be had. While much of the game is decently balanced, there are areas that are horrible for game balance. Pretty sure they are designed pinch points to try to force players to buy overpriced crap from the game store. In addition, Scopely support is non-existent. You enter a ticket and they take weeks to reply with a pre-canned text that does not even address the issue you reported. They don’t fix the bug or issue, and then just close the ticket. Customer service is a zero out of 10.

Consistently attacked by other players which prevents you from developing. Not worth my time. I wasted 2 weeks that I’ll never get back.

The very first action in the tutorial is “dock your ship” but pressing the button to dock results in an error message saying that the ship is already docked. No way to proceed.
  • Sad that they let a few ruin the game

The game itself is quite good. Unfortunately, they do not bother enforcing any form of civility. Can’t recommend any game, that allows threats of rape to other adults, and even children. Let alone the racial and sexual slurs. Numerous players report the same person, for theses action and at worst they are banned for a few hours.

  • Garbage

This game is garbage. If you have money you can be successful. If you don’t, all your hard work can be undone in 10 minutes by people who have money and literally have free reign on the entire game. It’s one sided. It’s not fun. Support doesn’t care about you. They only want your money. Don’t get this game. It will ruin games for you. Bullying is encouraged by the creators of the game.
