When paired with a compatible Garmin Varia™ device¹, the Varia™ app has the tools you need to ride with confidence. Using the Varia™ app, you can: • Be alerted right on your phone when approaching vehicles are within 140 meters behind your bicycle. • View color-coded alerts based on surrounding traffic: Green means you’re all clear, yellow means a vehicle is approaching, and red means a vehicle is coming at you quickly and you should take caution. • Receive tone and vibration alerts for approaching vehicles even when you’re not looking at your phone. Easy to Use Pairing your Garmin Varia™ device with the app is quick and easy. Once you set it up, the Varia™ app will automatically recognize your device. Even if you already have a Varia™ device paired with a compatible Garmin device or head unit, the Varia™ app provides additional awareness and peace of mind while riding. ¹ Compatible devices are the Varia™ RVR315 Rearview Radar and Varia™ RTL515 Radar Tail Light.

    This radar definitely makes me more visible and aware of traffic on my rides. Very reliable. My main wish is some app improvements. Most import the need to be able to adjust the alert volume independently of the phone volume. I ride with music and I would like to make the alerts louder without blasting the music. When the is any wind noise the alert sounds can get drowned out. It would also be great to have some basic music controls since the screen is always on anyway. One additional recommendation is that the unit should remember the last setting for the flash pattern of the light. It’s a minor annoyance but my $20 LED light cans do this.

    I’m disappointed that I can’t change the light mode on my Varia device via the app. It looks like it’s possible via one of the Edge computers but I don’t own one of those devices.

    We bought the RTL510 and learned that this app would not work with the 510. I was able to return the 510 and replaced it with the RTL515. We ride a tandem bicycle and the nice loud alert that the app emits draws our attention to the fact that we have a vehicle or vehicles approaching from the rear. The app works great with the RTL515. It connected immediately with no hassle.

    Too bad this doesn’t work with the RTL510. I just got my 510 and while I’m waiting for my Edge 520+ to arrive (another week +), this app would have been a great way to get using the radar unit. Can’t really rate it fairly but it looks like it might be cool.
