Description

Gitbox is a simple yet powerful Git repository manager. Important: to make FileMerge work with the latest Xcode, read the instruction: http://gitboxapp.com/ • Full text search in commit metadata, file paths and diffs. • Full support for pull, fetch, push, stash, rebase, branch reset, tagging and checkout. • Automatic fetch from remote servers. • Visual diff between branches. • Integration with popular diff tools (Kaleidoscope, Changes etc.) • Submodule support and automatic submodule updates. • Color tagging for commits (better than "git bisect"). • Drag and drop file from history. • Quick Look for files in history. • Instant sync with the file system, smooth integration with Terminal. You can clone, push and pull using usual protocols supported by Git (including HTTP). Repositories and clones on the local and networking filesystems are also supported. Gitbox is powered by the standard build of Git 1.7 which is protected by GNU General Public License Version 2. Gitbox neither links (statically or dynamically) with Git nor uses specific APIs to work with Git. You can obtain Git source code at the following address: http://git-scm.com/ According the GPLv2 section 3.b, if you want a copy of source code for the bundled Git, I can provide it on a physical media for the cost of production and distribution. See Legal Info in the app for details.

For simple tasks is perfect. It maintains a couple of branches and it handles commits, pull, pushs, mergers, whitout the need of the command line.
  • Okay for simple tasks, not compatible with iCloud Drive

Apparently the developer keeps deleting my review. But this app is NOT really compatible with storing git checkouts on iCloud Drive because it keeps computing diffs wrong as a result of that. It's reasonably useful other than that but just a bit stale.
  • Good & simple Git GUI w/ bugs

I’ve been using this app for 5 years now. It’s good. It gets the job done. And it’s very simple to use. BUT it hasn’t been updated since 2012, so there are bugs with it. It will crash. And if you have loads of branches, it will be constantly working on refreshing and eating up computer resources, which is unfortunate because it’s a great program. That all being said, I still use it daily for > 90% of my git work, bugs and all.
  • Issues with Remote Branches

I’ve used Gitbox for many years. However, I’ve noticed some issues. 1) Deleting remote branches via the interface doesn’t appear to work. 2) Sometimes the remote tracked branch displayed in the interface doesn’t match Git on the command line. Additionally, resetting the remote via the interface sometimes doesn’t stick. I prefer using Gitbox, but I fear I may have to switch to another tool or just use the CLI.
  • Feels incomplete...

I went to go check in my project to a bare repository I use for all of my devices as I am a student and require the ability to use any device to code. I go to add 25 files (not even scratching this project I am tackling) and I cannot add all files at once to push. I have to tick each one at a time. So what happens if I check out a 100 file project in a few months. Every day I have to tick each file I want to check out and in…I am very happy I spent no money on this.
  • Used to be okay.

This was a decent lightweight Git client back when it was actively maintained. The last update, according to the web site, is April 2012. It hasn't kept up with changes to the Git cli. For instance, it refuses to push repositories if your push.default setting is set to "simple" (the current default) and advises to use a deprecated setting ("tracking").
  • Good but frustrating authentication bug

I like the grouping of repositories and use it for that and easier pulls and pushes. However, one bug is that when connecting to a respository for the first time, for some repositories, it pops up an authentication window, I enter my password, and it keeps popping it back up…and I cna thus never access that repository. Happens to about 25% of my repositories. Using Bitbucket. Frustrating issue that I hope can be fixed because it’ll be a great tool after that.

It's been 5 years since this app was last updated, and I still use it periodically. Having used a fair number of SVN and Git clients, GitBox is, the easiest versioning experience I've ever had the pleasure of using for simple code projects (more complicated projects need a more full-featured Git client, and of course graphics and video need a significantly different solution altogether). It would be really nice to have a few more features, such as amending previous commits, but otherwise this is the the friendliest versioning app I've ever used.
