  • No Swift support, Snippet insert not easy

I got this with the hopes of using it for code snippets to insert, sort of like Text Expander. That functionality is not really part of the program. You can add a menubar icon which you can click through to find snippets, but it's not clean. Also, there is no code highlighting for Swift. Or Go. So not usuable for me, not being actively maintained it appears. Recommend not buying.
  • Dashes Right Past Dash!

This is easily the best snippet app I’ve found. The functionality is top-notch, and the user interface is fast and well-conceived. It appears to not have been updated in a long time, and the lack of Swift syntax highlighting is the only reason I’m not giving CodeBox 5 stars. It was well worth $9.99, but I suspect the author would realize more revenue from a price point that’s more in line with the competition. That said, there’s really no reason to look any further.
  • Wish I could rate this higher...

Was a great app when it came out, but completely neglected. Problems with moving window when used from menu bar. No op[dates in almost 5 years. And biggest omission? NO update whatsoever to support Swift, even though Swift has been out for 3 years now…. Please get on it developer, or pull the app…. Or at least opens ource it… I can recommend using Dash for storing the snippet, although it really is not as full a snippet tool (meant more to autopaste than to keep a library of code like this does so well)
  • Great app, but extremely buggy

Update: Abandonded. This app hasn’t been updated since 2012! Do not buy it! I really like this app, but it has a number of bugs that interrupt workflow and make it frustrating to use at times. In the latest version, snippets are expanded without me hitting 'tab', so I keep getting unwanted expansions as I type. Also, I can't just click on tabs without highlighting all of them. You have to click right on the edge of the tab to select. I'm also unable to search all my snippets in the snippet column, if the tag list is showing in the far left column. I have to first change to the folder view, select all snippets again and then conduct a search. Finally, everytime I launch the app, it forgets my menubar setting. Every time I have to open prefernces to turn it back on. Lots of potential in this app, but some of the bugs have got to be worked out.
  • A good start but needs a lot more work.

Text-only note taking — no images — is my biggest problem with this. I’d really like to be able to take a screen grap, save it to a file and then import it into this app, but no. I don’t even need them to be embedded in the text. There are already tabs for multiple files for a given topic. File support for graphics is solidly built into Cocoa. So why not this feature is mystery to me. Contacted the developer but this seems to be beyond his ability. If you are ok with text only, then this is an ok app.
  • Nice app but too buggy to use {ABANDONWARE]

There are things I love about this app but it's too buggy to use. While bugs are annoying, Codebox has a system crippling memory leak when the filter is used. If you use use the filter to search be prepared to quit quickly or pray that your coding work is saved. Worse it's ABANDONWARE since the developer hasn't responded to bug reports or even updated since 2012. I STRONGLY recommend not rewarding this developer by buying this app. I'm beginning to wish I hadn't.
  • No Swift support

I just bought Codebox (April 2016) and regret not doing a little more homework. I wanted the app for Swift snippets and the app doesn’t have support for Swift. It doesn’t look like it’s been updated since 2012 and the last Twitter posts from the author are from 2013 making any future support a bit unlikely. I would recommend looking online at something like GistBox which, while doesn’t currently offer Swift support either, is as least being actively developed. Another option is to simply use something like Evernote. With great search and tags, it seems to offer the same as CodeBox, especially for languages missing syntax highlighting.
  • So close, but abandoned and buggy

If the author had kept fixing bugs and missing features (even simple things like missing languages, and the ability to easily add your own) this would be a solid app. It has a lot going for it, but unfortunately it also has a lot wrong with it. Don't waste your money. Take a look at Snippets Lab instead. The import from CodeBox is still buggy, but if you haven't already invested time and code into CodeBox, you won't care. An example bug with this app: if you have two monitors the menu goes flying offscreen. WHAT!?
  • Dead

I loved CodeBox. But I'd hate to see anyone else purchase this now. My app WON'T EVEN LAUNCH. Deleted prefs files, messed with permissions, the whole bit. All of this, of course, comes as no surprise: just look at the dates of the other reviews... 2012s and a few 2014s? Really. This app is DEAD.
  • Using CodeBox in 2015

CodeBox hasn’t had an update in almost three years. And while that might give me pause when buying a new app (and investing time in making it a meaningful part of my workflow), the fact is that CodeBox has run almost perfectly the entire time I’ve owned it. There is one small bug I’ve seen, and some areas could be improved. But I use it countless times every day, and it is just wonderful. Using CodeBar to search for snippets and paste into Sublime Text or Sequel Pro is super easy, and I regularly add new snippets, new smart groups, new tags, etc. Be warned that the file format is XML-like, but the actual code is stored in some kind of encrypted format. That means you can’t just open a CodeBox library file and see all of your code, but you can simply drag-and-drop your snippets to the Finder to export them as regular files. The proprietary format has not been an issue for me. I do hope an update will come someday, but I see no need to jump ship. It may not be the latest, but it’s still the greatest.
