Description

The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR (including v5), 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers. The list is actually much longer - see the program homepage for the full list. The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled filenames. The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you will ever need, and to stay out of your way. Also, if you need to open archives on your iPad or iPhone, look for "Archives" on the App Store, or go to https://theunarchiver.com/archives. It is based on The Unarchiver, and lets you easily handle Archives on iOS!

Pro: It sometimes worked on zip and other file types. Con: It’s never worked on any RAR file. None, zip, nada! ‘Extract any File’ works and had replaced this app on my computer.

I downloaded this app to open a .RAR file I received. As it turns out, Unarchiver forces itself to be the default on not just .RAR, but also .ZIP and other formats. I’m still trying to figure out how to fix this INSTEAD OF HANDLING THE FILE I DOWNLOADED THIS TO OPEN. Such a sleezy move by the app developers, but I guess you get what you pay for. I’m shocked that Apple permits this behavior in an app.

Great app! It was able to extract data from some corrupted zip files that the standard Mac archive utility wasn't able to open.

  • Can't set Archive Formats under Preferences

I already don't like this thing. Immediately after installation, it pops a Preferences window with an Archive Formats tab. This tab has a checklist that "looks" like it is for selecting/deselecting the archive formats that this app should work with. But it's FAKE! Trying to select or unselect anything just pops up a message "Consider setting The Unarchiver as the default app". Classic FAKEWARE tactic. I have very little confidence in apps that resort to this kind of thing.

This is the first time I have had to download rar files to my Mac and The Unarchiver was recomended to me. So far it has been unable to open any of the files. I looked up multiple vidios on how to use it and even redownloaded it but The Unarchiver wont open anything.
  • Forces you to make it the default app

It forces you to use the app as the default for too many different extensions. The only way to correct it back is to find each of those extensions and change them back to the original default extensions. One by one. No thanks.

just started using it couple days ago, and really like how it work well with wine but when download game files. some of data of game become package so I try to go preferencec and remove file format that turning the file into archive but it keep saying " consider setting the unarchiver as the default app for selected file types" which Im clues about as I just recently started to get into mac, and still learning the in and outs of it. So help would be much appeciated.

Everytime I try to start unarchiving a second file before the first one is complete, I get an error on the second file that reads “There was a [roblem while reading the contents of “(null)”: The file could not be opened”. When I have several rar items to decompress, I’d like to do them all at once and walk away, but with this error I can’t. Fix this bug and I’ll give it 6 stars. Note: This bug has persisted for a couple of years. 2020 Update: Bug has been fixed…Upgraded to 5 stars
