The Good: There are many Asian dramas from Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan fully translated to English, Spanish (both languages I am fluent in). The volunteer teams do a great job of explaining Asian norms and idiomatic expressions that help the non Asian audience understand what is going on. I appreciate them so much because I have learned a great deal about Korean culture present in k, c, and j-dramas. The live comment section is genius! I have laughed and had great time watching Asian dramas on Viki versus Netflix just for the peanut gallery comments. Dramas with great viewer comments include Flower of Evil and Lie After Lie. My enjoyment of those dramas increased substantially because of those comments. Love, love, love it🤣🤣🤣 The Bad: The UX is a pain to use. Streaming developers really need to sit and copy Netflix’s UX because you can be completely computer illiterate and learn to use it in 2 minutes. They are the standard for a reason and I wish other streamers would stop fronting and just copy their’s and make life easy for their viewers. Viki’s is a pain to use because they show you all the shows they have but once you are watching a show you don’t know to navigate any settings. I learned how to turn on and off viewer comments from the viewer commenters because so many people were asking how to do it in their commentary. The radio buttons make no sense and you always have to navigate out of your drama to make any changes-subtitle language, etc. The UX also tends to not record you watched partially or completely an episode when you have watched and ends ups restarting instead of leading you back to the last spot you were watching. The whole user experience just tends to be a mess. TRANSLATION TURNOVER and shows deemed premium content!!! These are my biggest gripes. I have a monthly paid subscription. On Netflix if they put an Asian drama on the service, it is completely translated making for a smooth experience. Even if the show is new and is only showing episodically week by week, when they upload it, it is fully translated. For example, I watched It’s Okay Not To Be Okay on Netflix and within a few hours of it’s airing in Korea it was uploaded on American Netflix FULLY TRANSLATED because Netflix PAYS and acknowledges their translators on each episode of the translated show. My issue is Viki purports to be a service with completely translated dramas but relies completely on volunteers, mostly female, who are UNPAID and unacknowledged until the show’s end. It bothers me that this app, owned by Rakuten, a German company, doesn’t pay their translators, who do a better job than Netflix’s to be honest. Because Rakuten doesn’t pay their translators, you have popular current shows uploaded with no or incomplete translation for days while people in the comments complain and gripe. People who pay for the service feel slighted and wronged when this happens as is happening now with the K-drama Mr Queen. In the summer of 2020 a popular K-drama from 2013-2014 called Empress Ki came to the app after popular demand but it was not fully translated in English and was deemed premium content. A drama over five years old that viewers were clamoring for and they didn’t have a team set up to fully translate it to English before Rakuten uploaded it??? How Sway??? I literally dropped my premium plan for a basic one because of this incident. Rakuten needs to have paid translators because I have moved from a premium plan to a basic plan because I don’t comprehend why I’m paying monthly for raw audio of popular Asian dramas, some of them years old, that I can’t comprehend. Also, their whole business model seems to be exploiting the charity of women in the target language and it sits wrong with me each and every day. If the translators were men they’d be paid money and not verbal appreciation from the commenters only. Shows will change from basic paid content ($4.99 in North America)to premium content ($9.99) without warning or explanation. This happened in the fall with another popular k-drama from 2005 called My Lovely Sam Soon. I watched this drama the entire summer with a basic subscription but when I went back for a rewatch in the fall, it was suddenly premium content. I get Hyun Bin is a hot commodity since Crash Landing On You (a Netflix exclusive) but this was such a money grab by Rakuten that I have soured on them since. I can also watch two fully translated dramas by Hyun Bin on Netflix-the aforementioned CLOY and Memories From The Alhambra-with a basic plan there that I won’t have to worry will suddenly turn into premium content. TLDR: UNPAID TRANSLATORS are good, Rakuten Viki UX BAD and exploitative.

This is a good app. There are a lot of great shows/movies for free. It’s definitely worth paying the small monthly fee for the upgraded membership. Regardless, it does need some work. The options for searching and sorting are very limited. Would be better if there were more filters and genres to choose from such as boy love, mature content, and filter by ratings. Would be nice to sort results as well such as by ratings or release dates. Would be great if we could tag show’s we’ve seen so they don’t keep coming up and cluttering the results ( tag as seen/option to show or not show seen shows.

Me encanta esta App, se q son muchas películas y series. Si pudieran ser más rápidos con los subtítulos sería aún mejor, pero tienen un 10+.

I recently re-downloaded the Viki app because of a new K-drama. However, this time around the app isn’t working at all for some reason whenever I go to watch something it states that the “video failed to load”. Please fix when you have the chance. Super inconvenient :(
