Description

ResolutionTab is a menu bar app for fast switching between Standard & HiDPI display modes. Modern apps and websites should look great on Retina displays, so we have to test them in both standard and ultrahigh resolution modes. But when you configure your display in System Preferences, it takes plenty of time to switch from the standard to the HiDPI mode and vice versa. ResolutionTab is a minimal app living in the menu bar that toggles your Mac between Retina and non-Retina resolutions in one click. PLEASE NOTE: — 15" MacBook Pro Retina is compatible with HiDPI modes by default, so ResolutionTab will work out of the box. — 11" MacBook Air is not compatible with HiDPI. The screen is too small, so resolution would drop below the minimum required by OS X. — In all other cases, you have to enable virtual HiDPI modes manually. Here is how to do this with Administrative privileges: 1. Launch Terminal app located in your /Applications/Utitlities folder. 2. Type sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver DisplayResolutionEnabled -bool YES. 3. Log out and log in again. Done. HiDPI is activated and ResolutionTab will work properly.

Bought this a month ago and paid the $1.99...another $1.99 showed up on my bill this month. And click the support on this app - the URL can't be found. Apparently the $1.99 is PER MONTH and to me absolutely not worth it. Will be filing a complaint with Apple's App Store

I downloaded this app to fix a display latency issue within my virtualbox VM, and this worked like a charm! Just switch from the standard resolution (ex. 1440x1200 HiDPI) to 1440x900 (without HiDPI).

  • Fixes Mojave for external 4k monitor

Useful display scaling for external 4k monitors never shows up in MacOS Mojave for my external displayport monitors plugged into my 15" MacBookPro with 'Retina' display. That would leave me with either microscopic user interface elements, or blurry enlarged user interface except for video with looked great. ResolutionTab fixed Mojave's display scaling problems for me by providing an appropriate HiDPI scaling for 4k. Now content on the 4k monitor is just as sharp and about the same apparent size as the inboard retina display panel. THANK YOU!!!!! to the developer!!
  • Does not enable HiDPI mode with external 4k TV

I've tried several methods of enabling HiDPI on the EXTERNAL 4k TV my MacBook Pro is driving. 3840x2160 works fine, but the MB doesn't recognize it as a "Retina" display. If that is simply impossible (thanks for nothing, Apple) then that's disappointing, but fine. HOWEVER, the description of this app here in the App Store specifically says it will do what I'm wanting to do. And it doesn't. So 1 star, sorry.

  • I use this ResolutionTab to play Hearthstone full resolution on a Mac with Retina display

This simple app continues to work flawlessly across multiple versions of MacOS. I can confirm it works flawlessly with Sierra, High Sierra, and Mojave public beta. You can set your own shortcut to quickly switch between the most recently used resolution. Ideally, Blizzard would fix Hearthstone so it would automatically play at max resolution without pixellation. It took me while trying different apps before I found this one. Definitely worth two bucks!

Don’t waste your coffee money! ResolutionTab cannot detect HiDPI mode even after changing system root prefs via terminal. App is no longer supported by creator, website is down. Try SwitchResX - works great! You will need to disable SIP for setup (don’t forget to re-enable), but if you carefully read the instructions SwitchResX will allow you to run any custom resolution in HiDPI mode. Hope this helps!
