You started with hundreds of basic words and expressions, continued with tons of Norwegian grammar lessons and at the end of a full semester’s language course you could barely translate a sentence or say “Hello!” to a foreigner. That’s the traditional way to learn a language. Mondly has a different approach, that’s opposite to the average language course. Here are the key features that make Mondly a great tutor for you: • State-of-the-art Speech Recognition. Mondly knows exactly how to listen to your Norwegian words and phrases. You will only get a positive feedback if you speak Norwegian clearly and correctly. This will improve your pronunciation. • Useful phrases for real situations. Memorizing hundreds of isolated words is not the way to go when it comes to learning Norwegian. Mondly teaches you Norwegian vocabulary by offering you core words and phrases. The app breaks the learning process down into short lessons and puts them into themed packs. • Verb conjugations. If you want to learn more during this course, just tap the Norwegian verbs and get the full conjugation on the screen, including the translation. It’s faster and better than a dictionary. • Advanced Statistics. The App uses intelligent reporting, so you can always follow your progress. Build your vocabulary step by step and become better daily. • The Leaderboard. See how your friends are doing and compete with people from all over the world to become the best learner in the Mondly community family. Take the Weekly Quiz to become even better.

This app is so fun, and so easy. I am learning French right now, and I’m going to add Norwegian. Well worth the discounted lifetime access to 40 languages!
  • Hard to find Norwegian lessons when you know nothing about your heritage.

My last name is Helley. My grandparents are from Hel, Norway. I grew up eating lefsa, lutefisk, and krumkaka. (?..) I’m currently I’m at level 12 now in around 2 months. I don’t think I will be fluent in 8 months as the app says. Apparently I know 4.2% of the language. However, I’ve learned a ton! Give it a try. After week two, things start to come together. And after 8 weeks, I’ve really “started” to get the feel for the language. It’s sometimes redundant because the translation of “egg” in norsk is... egg.. but then they throw in a full speed sentence that keeps you on your toes. I really enjoy the app and I feel if I stick with it I’ll truly be able to speak Norwegian. This is a real review. The first one I’ve ever done. But I wanted to say something positive about this system. Look up my last name. I live in Bozeman Montana and I am not a robot making reviews. There’s my two cents. Takk!!

I’m by no means advanced in my understanding of Norwegian, but the repetition and varied recollection methods used in this app have, in fact, increased my understanding of the basics quite quickly. This is saying a lot because my memory is quite bad.

Overall this app works pretty well for learning the basics of a language, but it doesn’t let you spend a lot of time each day unless you pay to upgrade. In other words, if you don’t want to pay, it will take you a long time to learn a language in any serious way. The other leading app that I’m sure you know of will essentially let you study all day every day for free. The second minor issue I have is that the animations slow down how quickly you can answer questions. If you’re really fast, you’ll be quicker than it can handle because it’s busy trying to make the interface look slick. The problem is that if you are faster than it, it won’t register all of the words you tapped, and you’ll have to waste time moving them around in the sentence until it’s right. Lastly, the chat bot is a really great idea, but it doesn’t work very well in practice, I’m guessing because a non-native speaker of any language is never going to pronounce words and phrases as accurately as a native speaker. It’s actually not bad considering that, but you’ll never have any type of meaningful learning with it unless you are really accurate with 100% of your word pronunciation. Overall this is a great, fun app to introduce you to a new language, but there are better options if you’re looking to seriously learn.

God morgen everybody hva heter du? So to translate god morgen means good morning and hva heter du means what is your name. So you can learn a lot and have fun too! I learned that in just two days! So I highly recommend this app if you want to learn Norwegian. -Molly A. Hands

Fun easy way to learn. I wish they had something to read or do when sound is inappropriate.
